Kylie is performing an extraction to detect the presence of disinfection byproducts in drinking water samples. Disinfection byproducts are a regulated class of carcinogenic chemicals that are formed during water treatment. Treatment plants work to control microbial risk by disinfecting water with chlorine or chloramines, but disinfection byproducts form as a side effect. My work is focused on understanding the formation, speciation, and relative toxicity of these chemicals to inform future regulations and reduce risk from these chemicals at the tap
