I am pleased to serve as your 2019-2020 ARCS Colorado Chapter President. I accepted thinking that after serving as bookkeeper, assistant treasurer, and scholar profiler I understood much of the workings of our chapter. But now, just a few months into the role, I more clearly recognize the devotion and hours of work so many of our members contribute to keep our chapter running smoothly, allowing us to reward deserving college scientists. I would like to thank all our members for giving so freely of your time, talents, and treasure.
As our nation celebrates fifty years since the first human landed on the moon, I am excited to announce that this year’s Honoree is Dr. Angel Abbud-Madrid, Director of the Center for Space Resources at the Colorado School of Mines, which focuses on the exploration of space and the utilization of its resources using extra-terrestrial resources to fuel and support life on extended space travel. A true pioneer in the field, he leads the first academic program in the world that focuses on educating scientists, engineers, economists, entrepreneurs and policy makers in the developing field of space resources. We look forward to honoring Dr. Abbud-Madrid at our Scholar luncheon at CU Boulder and hearing more about his work at our Gala in May.
I hope to see many of you at our Fall Members’ meeting on September 12 at the home of Elnore Grow. Our speaker will be Becky Simon, a 2018- 2019 scholar from CU Boulder, who will share her current research on geologic formations. The Fall Members’ meeting also is an excellent opportunity to invite prospective members so please feel free to invite others who may be interested in learning more about ARCS.
