Colorado University Touchdown Club Hosts ARCS 2019 Scholar Awards Luncheon

Posted on Monday, February 3, 2020

The University Touchdown Club was the stunning venue for ARCS Colorado Chapter’s November 2019 Scholar Awards Luncheon.  Gretchen Lee and her team from the UC College of Engineering and UC’s Advancement Office rolled out the Red Carpet for ARCS donors, scholars, members and guests.
ARCS Chapter President, Sue Zoby, welcomed UC Chancellor Philip DiStefano who thanked the ARCS Colorado Chapter for 43 years of support to more than 1,000 scholars at six campuses totaling more than 4.9 million dollars.
Keynote speaker, Dr. Angel Abbud-Madrid, Director of Space Resources at Colorado School of Mines, deftly wove the history of space exploration with the history of ARCS and challenged this year’s “class” of ARCS scholars to “become the inspiration for the generations coming after you and to use this valuable of resource (inspiration) to continue making a reality of the dreams that those (ARCS) women had in 1958 when they started supporting STEM education as the main ingredient for innovation and leadership in the United States.”
Jim Benemann, CBS Channel 4 News Anchor, continued to challenge the scholars with on-stage interviews about their academic goals and research, interspersed with questions about hobbies and pets and a large dose of high humor, as only Jim Benemann can do.  Scholars received ARCS medallions, certificates of award and the peace of mind afforded by an ARCS award.
A very good time was had by all! Be sure to put the 2020 Scholar Luncheon on your November calendar!
